On The Blue Lady, Pirates and Carts…

So after the last entertaining escapade, I feel that a nice easy day is in order. Hailong has other ideas when the harbourmaster comes to the tavern to inform us that a suspicious ship has just docked. Hailong can’t resist and so I tag along to see what I can find out while his nibs keeps the crew busy. He invites the first mate and some crew to the inn on some pretence of doing business. They seem keen, but when they are on the ship, they indicate some boxes they wish to trade, but actually take others with them. Something dodgy going on here – what a surprise!

So they all go off to the tavern having armed themselves to the teeth; which seems a bit of overkill for a nice stroll along the quayside. Then most of the remaining crew arm themselves and head off….towards the tavern. I natuarally do the sensible thing and convince the militia that there is a band of homicidal sailors wandering around looking for a punch up. As we turn up it appears that Hailong has things under control. There are only about 12 sailors in the tavern with swords, knives, daggers, axes and pointy sticks drawn. Luckily the sight of the militia diffuses a somewhat tense situation and so we don’t have to change the sawdust earlier than planned…

We still need to find out what the cargo actually was (certainly not a load of grubby, rusty swords), so I go back to the ship and wait. I decide that immobilsing the ship by jamming the rudder would give us more time to check this out and pay some dock urchin to do it (I didn’t fancy a swim – have you seen what floats about in that harbour!?). He buggers it up , so I’m about to get wet when a cart pulls up with some skinny cloaked bloke aboard. He pays the captain, unloads the ‘real’ cargo and then sets off. But not before I sneak aboard the cart. Or should I say sneak under the cart and hold on for dear life! You’d think that car manufacturers would have put, I don’t know, some form of underfloor shelf or rack to make covertly riding a cart more comfortable! I feel another letter to the cartwrights on the way….

Anyway, the cart eventually goes to the ruined manor house at the end of town, up by the Thieves Quarter and it’s unloaded into the house. It must be said there was a lot of security for some ruined run-down old house. Then the cart leaves and goes directly to Ricardo’s house – the skinny bloke turning out to be his right hand man. Odd, very odd. So I report back and let others worry about the politics of merchants. Next on the agenda is a trip north in search of books on demons and to meet Vlad’s brother…
